Paper sculptures that allows stories to unfoldTap on screen

My work tends to provoke a smile or a grimace, as it can seem provocative or shocking. But is the reaction about the piece or the interpreter ?

Fascinated by psychology, sociology and anatomy, I use the 3 dimensions to unravel the telling of a story or personality, playing with clichés and being inspired by family, people and circumstances.

Julia Williamson is an English paper sculptor artist born in 1968. She has a home workshop in a small village located in the French alps. This allows her to create when time permitting. Besides making sculptures regularly since 2002, she works as a community nurse. Julia has 2 adult sons, 3 step children and 5 grand children.
Travelling was a big part of her youth. At age 17, she hitchhiked around Europe and then spent 2 years doing volunteer work on a kibbutz in Israel. Back in the UK, she completed a psychiatric nursing degree (1994) and discovered FIMO modelling clay through her community care job. The artist discovered paper sculpture once she moved in France in 2000 : “A friend made me discover paper sculpture, I enjoyed working on a bigger scale than FIMO straight away, allowing to push back the field of possibilities” she says.

Thinking
I am constantly thinking about my next pieces. It’s my way to relax and escape.
Study
I use the web, photos and books to study anatomy, expressions and clothing.
Preparation
I make the glue with corn starch cooked with water. No nasty additives.
Structure
I make the base structure with recycled paper and tape only.
Details
I work on the details by layering paper. Allowing time (days) in between to dry.
Finitions
I apply several layers of paint and water based varnish.
